By far the biggest space to be designed and built for What We Do came out of the Industrial Design department (unsurprisingly). Here, some of the two-dozen students who showed up to help are supporting the construction of the erector set-like, 23 foot wide, geodesic dome that will house all of the presentations on Market Square before being wrapped in clear plastic.
We enjoyed a great day this Sunday as building commenced for the What We Do spaces. Between the architecture creations consisting of wood and twine, the geodesic dome, the old-timey platform, the temple, and the string connecting them all, this event will be housed in some truly unique spaces.
What We Do is a week a way a we are going to start building the spaces this sunday at noon. It is supposed to be sunny and 60 after some morning drizzle so come and enjoy the sun and join in on the building fun. We’ll be all over campus starting to construct the spaces that will house What We Do and we need your help.
In the interest of easing the burdens for the student volunteers we have decided to make 6 spaces instead of 8. The Upper Quad was too removed and the space between Carr Haus and Waterman wasn’t a very good space. We have shuffled the groups of student volunteers so that there are more majors collaborating on every space. The spaces are in planning mode now but construction will begin on Saturday, April 4th, and continue throughout the week leading up to What We Do on Saturday, April 11th.
The events of What We Do will be housed by spaces built by student volunteers from every major at RISD. They will team up (based on size and discipline), be given a budget and several requirements, and simply allowed to just create something with people they wouldn’t normally be working with.
Students interested in creating a space can attend a brief meeting this Sunday, March 8th at 1pm in the RISD Store. And to avoid confusion, this pairing of departments and building of spaces has nothing to do with sharing on the day of the event; presenters will be randomly assigned to 1 of the 8 spaces and operate completely independent of departments.
