RISD in a bag

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

When Justin handed me this ziplock bag full of tapes I was puzzled until he said, “This is what we do. In a bag. All of it.” I was blown away that I was physically holding it all and just how much was in there. We are working to get videos of the day’s events online in tandem with laying out plans for next year’s What We Do.

An Amazing Day

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

A huge thank you to everyone that made What We Do possible. Despite the rain, we had an excellent turnout, hundreds of ideas were shared and a myriad of new connections were made.

Videos of the entire event will be posted on this website in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.

If you have, please upload them to our Flickr Group

Dome1

By far the biggest space to be designed and built for What We Do came out of the Industrial Design department (unsurprisingly). Here, some of the two-dozen students who showed up to help are supporting the construction of the erector set-like, 23 foot wide, geodesic dome that will house all of the presentations on Market Square before being wrapped in clear plastic.

Space changes & final schedule

Friday, April 10th, 2009

The rain forecast for Saturday, April 11th has forced us to make some changes we were trying to avoid. Our main goal is to accommodate the speakers and their technical requirements that are complicated by the rain. That and not wanting to get everyone wet. We have moved four of the spaces indoors to spaces that are all within eyesight of the original spaces.

Please see this updated schedule and map. Also, here is a google map with all of the spaces showing where buildings are for people unfamiliar.

RISD takes to the streets to show ‘What We Do’

On the waterfront, Ryan Scott Bardsley, a 1998 industrial design graduate, will demonstrate a robot he designed to help train military medics to treat war casualties.

At Market Square, Karin Kunori and Kristen Biddeson, both graphic design students, will show how to make letterpress prints. Outside the Chace Center, Respond/Design, a group focused on sustainability and social justice in arts and design, will be sharing its recent work. And at Frazier Terrace, apparel design student Susannah Hallagan will show her audience how to “make art with your body.”

That’s just a 20-minute sliver of “What We Do,” an unprecedented, student-run event to be held Saturday, April 11 at the Rhode Island School of Design that aims to capture, in a frenzied six hours at six locations, the spirit of Providence’s most creative and offbeat college.

Chace Plaza Building

We enjoyed a great day this Sunday as building commenced for the What We Do spaces. Between the architecture creations consisting of wood and twine, the geodesic dome, the old-timey platform, the temple, and the string connecting them all, this event will be housed in some truly unique spaces.
